Learn More About PAGE STAR. < Back to STAR Home Student Teacher Academic Recognition (STAR) STAR Banquet and Selection of Winners Selection of Winners The State PAGE STAR Student is selected from the STAR Region Winners by a panel of judges. The panel includes representatives from higher education, secondary education, education-at-large and the business sector. Each Region STAR Student submits written comprehensive biographical information to the judges. In addition, a statement from each Region STAR Teacher is provided in support of his/her STAR Student. At this point, the SAT is only one of many factors involved in the selection process. The judges interview the Region STAR Students and consider the following areas: Scholarship Extracurricular activities Academic ability Personal philosophy Leadership Initiative Citizenship Opinions Personal objectives Attitudes State PAGE STAR Banquet The State PAGE STAR Banquet, sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation, is held in Atlanta. Highlighting the banquet are interviews of the Region STAR Students conducted by an Atlanta television personality. Region STAR Students and Teachers are presented a hand-blown glass star. In addition to the Region Winners, all STAR Students and STAR Teachers are invited to attend the state banquet, be recognized and receive a special memento. Local sponsors and school contacts will receive banquet ticket information. The evening’s festivities end with the presentation of scholarships and awards to the state winners. The scholarships are provided by corporate, foundation and individual STAR sponsors. The State PAGE STAR Banquet is held each year in Atlanta in April. Shiver Elementary School’s Lawren Phillips, center, a SY 2023-2024 recipient, utilized grant funds to purchase a variety of instructional materials and manipulatives that enable students to use hands-on learning experiences to build phonemic awareness and increase decoding skills to become fluent readers. With Lawren are PAGE Membership Services Representative Michele Dechman (left) and Mr. Todd Jones, Principal. Lauren Atkinson is a PAGE staff attorney. < Back Lauren Atkinson Staff Attorney/Stockbridge Lauren has served as a PAGE in-house attorney since 2018. She is a graduate of Elon University, in Elon, North Carolina, and received her law degree from Mercer Law School in Macon, Georgia. Prior to attending law school, Lauren was a middle school educator in Atlanta Public Schools. Lauren is a native of Frederick, Maryland, and has lived in Georgia since 2012. She currently resides in Stockbridge, Georgia, with her husband, their daughter, and their standard poodle named Arthur. When she is not helping Georgia educators, she enjoys exercising, cooking, trying new restaurants with her husband and spending time with family.

< RETURN TO GEORGIA ACADEMIC DECATHLON VOLUNTEER INFORMATION Georgia Academic Decathlon Speech Judges & Timers Volunteer Information Date: Saturday, February 24, 2024Time: 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Location: Kennesaw State University (more directions in 2024 Speech Volunteer Letter link) Download 2024 Speech Volunteer Letter and Parking Instructions here. Understanding the Speech Rubric Thanks to all of you who have volunteered to judge the Speech event of the PAGE Georgia Academic Decathlon. For the few hours of your time spent in this endeavor, you will be rewarded by witnessing the results of the hard work and creativity of some fine young people. The Speech event of PAGE GAD is the least restrictive of the events in that the decathletes can choose their own topic on which to base their prepared speeches. They are cautioned by their coaches that the topic and delivery must be in good taste, but that is about it as far as restrictions. Expect to hear some wildly creative presentations as well as some fairly staid ones. SPEECH JUDGES In the training session you will be instructed as to how to score each section of the Speech Rubric. Download the rubric here. (This is just a sample. All speeches will be scored electronically on a personal device utilizing a Google form.) As a judge you will be listening for the expected development of each speech - opening, body, and conclusion. You will then determine how effective the speech was; that is, how did the audience receive the speech. Was it interesting? The correctness of language is another element to be considered. Does the speaker have command of proper grammar and punctuation? Appropriateness of language will be judged by whether the language promotes clear understanding and fits the occasion. An interesting element to evaluate is speech value. Is the speaker relating something meaningful to you as a listener? The decathletes will have been coached on using the proper voice, using a variety of pitches, volume, and rate to be clearly understood. The last element to be evaluated is the non-verbal aspect. This would include appearance, body language, and mannerisms. During the training session, I will be showing you some examples of speeches which will range from poor to excellent. We will try to set some benchmarks for evaluating each of the elements. If the past is any indicator, your most difficult task will be to score an average speech as average, a poor speech as poor, and to save the highest scores for the truly excellent presentations. I will do my best to help you make those judgments. Be assured that you will be in for a highly entertaining few hours. SPEECH TIMERS Using timers on their personal digital devices or GAD-issued stopwatches, time the competitors' speeches, giving warnings if the speeches are in danger of going over the allotted times. Once the speeches are finished, the Speech Timers record the times so that Speech Judges can issue scoring penalties if necessary. Thanks again for the time you are willing to contribute. She’s also a member of the PAGE Coaching team. Hayley is a graduate of Berry College, University of West Georgia, and Lincoln University where she earned her degrees in early childhood, special education, and leadership. Married with one son, Hayley lives in Calhoun, Georgia. She also works as an adjunct instructor at NWGA RESA supporting special education TAPP candidates. Hayley enjoys cross stitching, canning produce from her garden, and spending time on her back porch with family and friends.
