Colleges and universities across the nation would see significant changes to their teacher preparation programs under rules being proposed by the U.S. Department of Education. New reporting requirements, more stringent accountability requirements (including use of student test scores as evidence of program quality), and publication of institutional “report cards” would all be included in the new rules, which also call for financial sanctions to hit programs rated consistently low. The proposed rules have been released for a 60-day period during which interested parties may comment.
